Newsletter"I should be in the grave" (cont...)
"Crack cocaine," Rick says today, "took me right down to the bottom." He knew he was in bad shape. He could hardly walk 20 feet without falling down. But his pride and his addictions kept pushing him. "Every time I would feel bad," Rick remembers, "I would fire up that pipe. Keep rolling." "If you go in there, you will die."Rick took his hand off the door of the bar and looked around. There was nobody around. He put his hand back on the door. "If you go in there, you will die."Rick was stunned. He withdrew his hand. He turned around and walked away – and wound up at Wheeler Mission. Doctors gave him a week to live. But Rick fought hard to live."I should be dead," Rick acknowledges. "I should be in the grave." God spared his life. Even though Rick was well into his 50s, he began to change. It was a tough road at first; cocaine withdrawal was agony. But with your support, we loved him, encouraged him, helped him. Through the proven, tightly disciplined Hebron Addiction Recovery Program, God has done a miraculous work in Rick's life. His relationships are benefiting as well. "My son and I see each other two or three times a week." He's also getting remarried to his ex–wife! Rick has given up the biker's life. "I'm riding a bicycle 10 or 15 miles a day now," he says. He's serving on staff at Wheeler Mission, back in his old carpenter's clothes. He no longer sounds like the pride–driven Rick of old. "The more I stay out of the way," Rick says, "the more God can work in me!" To read the recent issue of Inside Story, |
